NEW SYSTEM
TO SAFEGUARD HOSPITAL SHIPS CONSIDERED IN AUSTRALIA. ' FREQUENT REPORTING OF POSITION. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) CANBERRA, May 21. To safeguard hospital ships in Australian waters against a repetition of Japanese attacks like that on the Centaur, the introduction of a new system of reporting positions by these ships is being considered by the Minister of the Navy. Mr Makin. The basis of the new scheme would be a regulation that hospital ships must report their position, course and destination at frequent intervals. This would enable the ship’s course to be accurately plotted. In the event of an unexplained interruption in the reporting schedule, an immediate search coulcl be made. This would remove the danger of the survivors of another sinking being compelled to spend many hours in the water. British hospital ships in the Mediterranean follow a four-hourly reporting schedule. A London message says that Tokio radio stated that an American plane on Tuesday, attacked the Japanese hospital ship. Arabian Marti off New Ireland. The Americans. ; the enemy radio also alleges, had attacked the Arabian Marti in Rangoon harbour on April, 1.
