Mrs P. Dillon, who has been the guest of Mrs G. C. Williams, Short Street, has returned to Blenheim. Miss K. Brown, Pownall Street, who has been visiting the South Island, has returned to Masterton. Mr and Mrs C. F. Mills, Villa Street, Masterton, have received word from their son, Sapper E. O. Mills, stating that he is fit' and well.
The engagement is announced of Peggy Doreen, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs J. W. Mosen, of Masterton, and Leading Aircraftman Norman Leslie Handricks, eldest son of Mrs R. and the late Mr N. F. J. Handricks, Auckland. i
The engagement 'is announced of Jean Reta Leng, R.N.Z.A.F., youngest daughter of Mr and the late Mrs R. Leng, Cornwall Street, Masterton, to Jean Lew Verne, U.S.M.C., youngest son of Mr and the late Mrs J. Jones, De Moine, lowa, U.S.A. The death has occurred, states a Press Association message from Westport, of Mr James Scanlon, J.P., aged 76, a former mayor of Westport and chairman of the harbour board and the fire board. He was mayor of Westport when the waterworks was constructed. He was a native of Charleston. The death of Mi’ John Gunn Polson, aged 62, principal of Christchurch Teachers’ Training College, is reported in a Press Association telegram. Most of Mr Polson’s teaching work was done in Canterbury. He graduated M.A. at Canterbury University College in 1915, and was headmaster of Belfast School when in 1919 he was appointed viceprincipal of the training college, becoming principal in 1931. Mr T. R. Allen, District Public Trustee in Wanganui, who has retired on superannuation ater 34 years’ service, 25 having been spent in Wanganui, was the guest of honour at a social gathering. In making a presentation of an easy chair and an oak mantel clock from present and former members of the Wanganui staff, Mr S. A. Gibson, Assistant Public Trustee, referred to Mr Allen’s long association with the office, including 25 years as District Public Trustee for Wanganui, and wished him a long and happy retirement.
The death is reported by a Press Association message from New Plymouth of Mr Sydney George Smith, New Plymouth, who was Minister of Labour and Immigration in the Forbes Ministry, and a member of the Ward and Forbes Governments in 1930-31. From 1934 to 1935 he was Minister of Education. Mr Smith, who was born in New Plymouth in 1879, was for 20 years with the Railways Department. He held several offices in the trade union movement for a number of years. From 1918 to 1925 he was M.P. for Taranaki, and for 10 years from 1928'he was M.P. for New Plymouth. Deep regret at the death of Mr Smith was expressed last night by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, who expressed his sincere sympathy and that of the Government to Mrs Smith and the members of the family.
