OBITUARY
SIR ALFRED RANSOM, M.P. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, This Day.. Sir Alfred Ransom died early this morning, after a brief illness, though he had been in changeable health for some time past. Fie was aged 75, and leaves a widow, a married son and a daughter. Sir Alfred Ransom, who was born at Lower Hutt in 1868, started business in Dannevirke as a saddler in 1888, and was also long engaged in sheep farming. He was first president of the Dannevirke Chamber of Commerce, was Mayor of the town from 1910 to 1919, and served on other local bodies and organisations. He had been member for Pahiatua since 1922, and held Ministerial portfolios successively in the Ward, Forbes and Coalition Governments from 1928 onwards. In 1930 and again in 1935 he was Acting-Prime Minister. He was knighted in 1935.
