CAUSES OF FIRES
MASTERTON BOROUGH RETURNS. A summary of the causes of the 50 fires recorded in the Masterton borough for the year ending March 31, was given by the Superintendent of the Masterton Fire Brigade, Mr T. B. Clark, at last night’s meeting of the Fire Board as follow: —Burning off grass, 2; children playing with matches, 2; electric iron left switched on, 1; foul chimneys, 6; incendiarism, 1; lighted cigarette ends thrown down, 7; lighted matches thrown down, 10; live ashes, 1; overheating of gas stove, 1; do., fat, 1; do., engine exhaust, 1; sparks from rubbish fires, 5; sparks from chimney, 1; sparks from open fire grate, 1; sparks from railway locomotives, 7; ' vapour of spirits in contact with electric spark, 3.
