MAGISTRATE’S COURT
POSSESSION OF FIREARMS. (“Times-Age” ■ Special.) Before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., at the Carterton Courthouse yesterday. J. W. Hayes was proceeded against by the police on a charge of having been unlawfully in possession on December 21, 1942, of a .45 calibre six chamber Webley revolver, he not being the registered owner; also that he was unlawfully in possession of a .303 Lee Enfield service rifle, not having the same registered. Further charges were preferred against him that in 1940 he procured possession of a .45 calibre six chamber Webley revolver save in pursuance of a permit issued by a police officer; also of gaining possession of a .303 rifle in 1940; that in .1941 at Carterton he procured possession of a .22 calibre seven ■chamber Young American revolver from Basil L. Gallon, save in pursuance of a permit issued to him by an officer of police, authorised in that behalf. The police further charged him with procuring in 1942 and being in possession of 33 rounds of .30 calibre tracer ammunition, 17 rounds of .30 calibre ammunition, 98 rounds of .450 calibre ammunition and six rounds of .45.5 Webley revolver ammunition save in pursuance of a permit issued to him; that during the month of August, 1941, he delivered possession of a firearm, a .303 service rifle, to R. J. Brown, being a person other than the person entitled to obtain same by virtue of a permit.
Defendant pleaded guilty to all charges and was fined £6 10» with £4 10s 6d costs. The Magistrate ordered the confiscation of the arms and ammunition, which were exhibited in court.
R. J. Brown was charged by the police that in August, 1941, he procured possession of a firearm, a .303 service rifle from John Hayes, save in pursuance of a permit issued by an officer of the police. Defendant did not appear but submitted a written statement. He was fined £1 with costs 10s.
B. L. Gallon was charged that in 1941 at Carterton he delivered possession of a .22 calibre seven chamber Young American revolver to John Hayes, he being not entitled to obtain same without police permission. He pleaded guilty and was fined £1 and costs 10s.
H. W. Munro, for failing to carry a warrant of fitness in February last, was fined £l’ with 12s costs.
WATERED MILK DAIRY FARMER FINED £lO. Mrs J. Fitzgerald was charged at the Carterton Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., that on March 30, 1943, she did sell milk that did not comply with the standard prescribed by law, in that it contained 17 per cent of added water, and was deficient in milk solids, other’ than milk fats. Defendant was proceeded against by the police, acting upon information given by an employee. Mr D. L. Taverner appeared for defendant. After hearing the evidence of a boy named Davies and the Health Inspector, defendant was fined £lO with costs 10s and witness’s expenses. Football. The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Rugby Football Union will be held in Carterton on Saturday evening next at 8 p.m. • Hockey. The following team will represent Carterton seniors in a hockey game against Greytown seniors at Greytown on Saturday at 2.15 p.m.:—D. Gallon, B. Fryer, K. Ordish, B. Goodin, R. Sayer, R. Benge, K. Jamieson, I. Butcher, L. Fitzgerald, B. Hopkins, and B. Gallon.
REGENT THEATRE “NAZI AGENT.”
A gripping spy story, “Nazi Agent,” heads the programme at the Regent Theatre tonight. Conrad Veidt appears in two roles. Plenty of laughs are offered in the supporting feature, “Affectionately Yours.” Merle Oberon and Dennis Morgan take the principal parts.
