ANCIENT VIOLINS

SOLD FOR HIGH PRICES IN PARIS. Ancient violins fetched big prices at a recent sale at' the Drouot sales rooms in Paris. A single violin bow made by Voirin was knocked down at 20,000 francs, and another, by Lamy, at 11,700 francs. A violin, signed Vuillaume, was bought for 43,000 francs. Another, a copy of a Stradivarius, was sold for 32,000 francs. A work of Bernadel the elder, a violin made for the Paris Exhibition of 1863, a model Stradivarius, reached 26,000 francs. A ’cello by Vuillaume, a Maggini model, went for 29.500 francs. Other violins at this sale fetched prices ranging between 9,000 and 16,000 francs.

The exchange value of the franc, in June, 1940, was 176 to the £ sterling. Bidding for antiques has lately been high in Paris, which is taken by many as an indication that Frenchmen are in this way investing francs against a fall.
