Dr H. H. Allan, D.Sc., M.A., F.L.S., F.R.S.N.Z., was elected president of the Royal Society of New Zealand at' the annual meeting of the council of the society in Wellington yesterday. Dr L. H. Briggs, lecturer in chemistry at Auckland University College, has been selected by the Royal Society of New Zealand as recipient of the Hector Medal and Prize for Ethnology for the current year. The engagement is announced of Monica June (Marge), younger daughter of Mr and Mrs C. F. Price, West Bush Road, to Gunner Thomas Albert Berrington (N.Z.E.F. overseas), eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. T. Berrington, Pohangina. Sister M. Chisholm, who was recently awarded the Royal Red Cross decoration, has been sent a case of comforts, including cakes, tin foods, books and other articles by the Masterton Red Cross Society. Yesterday a cable acknowledging the much-appre-ciated gift was received. Sister Chisholm is serving with the forces in the Middle East.

Mr J. O. Riddell, of Methven, and formerly of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, has been appointed irrigation engineer for Canterbury. Mr Riddell who is the son of Mrs W. O. Riddell, of Longbush, Masterton, received his primary education at the Mount Bruce School. He is a batchelor of engineering of the New Zealand University and is an associate member of the Institute of Civil Engineers.
