CARTERTON

RED CROSS SOCIETY MEETING OF SUB-CENTRE. (“Times-Age” Special.) At a committee meeting of the Carterton Sub-Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, the president, Mrs L. J. Loftus, was in the chair. Also present were Mesdames Cole, Sorensen and Stubbs, Mrs Fairbrother, Transport Commandant; Miss Sorensen, representing the Transport Section; Mrs Steffert, Section Leader; and Miss Ingley, representing the V.A. section. Accounts amounting, to £5 12s were passed. Donations of £1 each were received from Messrs C. Larsen and R. J. Taucher, and 25 subscriptions of £3 2s 6d. Letters of thanks were to be sent to Mrs Roberts, Kent Street, for her gifts of a wireless set, gramaphone records, magazines, and to Miss Buick for magazines. The Prisoner of War Bureau was to be opened shortly in a shop next to Stubb’s Pharmacy. Mrs Steffert gave a brief report of V.A. activities, stating that Home Nursing lectures had commenced and the results of the Hygiene and Sanitation examination were to hand. Of the thirteen candidates examined ten had passed, six with honours. Mrs Fairbrother gave an interesting report of the inspection of V.A.D's. by the Commandant-in-Chief, Lady Newall, in Wellington on May 4. Two more members had sat for their mechanical examination. Members were very busy transporting sick soldiers either to hospitals or to trains, etc. A discussion took place on the use of transport cars for other purposes. The secretary was instructed to obtain information on this matter. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT PARKVALE. Mrs R. Williams presided over the monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute. Mr P. L. Beere, automobile service officer, gave an interesting talk on road safety, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs V/. King was the winner of a competition. The monthly competitions, for which Mesdames P. L. Beere and A. Tinsley were the judges, resulted: —Seniors (apple pie): Mrs Warrington, 1; Mrs ' Williams, 2; Mrs Conwell, 3. Seniors and juniors (shrubs): Mrs E. Rose, 1; Miss M. Lukies, 2; Mrs N. McKinnon, 3. Best bloom .large), seniors: Mrs E. Rose, 1; Mrs N. McKinnon, 2. Best bloom (small), seniors: Mrs R. Williams, 1; Mrs N. McKinnon, 2; Mrs Conwell, 3. Junior cooking: Miss M. Lukies, 1; Miss Mavis Lukies, 2; Miss J. Lukies, 3. Flowers (small), juniors: Miss Mavis Lukies, 1; Miss J. Lukies, 2; Miss H. McKinnon, 3. The hostesses were Mrs Conwell and the Misses Lukies. DRUIDS’ LODGE P.D.P. Bro. H. Matson presided over a meeting of Totara Lodge, No. 3, U.A.0.D., held last night. Motions of condolence, were passed to Bros. J. McCann on the death of his wife; to Bros. W. E., Len, George and M. Knowles on the death of their father, and to Bros. Archie and Donald McPhee on the death of their brother. Reference was made to the late Mr Alex. McPhee’s service in the South African War. He was wounded in an action in which the late Major W. Hardam won his V.C. by carrying McPhee to safety under enemy fire. In the same engagement Bro. Walter Hart took, a prominent part, having his horse shot from under him and receiving an injury to one of bis legs, for which he was invadided home. Bros. Harold Hodder and Geo. Hart were in the same action. It was reported that Bro. Giff Bain, who had gone overseas on active service, had arrived at his destination fit and well. Three declarations off the sick funds were received, and a sum of £l2 Ils 4d was passed. Members were reminded that the next Lodge night, May 31, was the halfyearly meeting, when officers will be elected. Card Evening. The Labour Committee held a successful card tourney on Saturday evening. The tourney was well attended. Prizes were won by Mrs L. Goodin, Mrs H. Hodder, Mr Gordon Goodin and Mrs Ticehurst Junr. Personal. Flight Sergeant Stan Hall will be a guest of honour at a social and presentation in the Clareville Hall on Friday evening next. REGENT THEATRE SPECIAL MATINEE TOMORROW. A special matinee will be held tomorrow at the Regent Theatre, starting at 2 p.m. The attractions will be “Donald’s Vacation,” “The Pointer” and “Mickey’s Trailer.” Tonight Nelson Eddy and Rise Stevens appear in “The Chocolate Soldier,” a bright musical romance.
