POWER FAILURE
CAUSED BV A MOUSE EXPLOSION IN SWITCH GEAR. MISHAP AT WAINGAWA SUB-STATION. A mouse, well cooked, caused a power failure throughout the Wairarapa district this morning. The mishap occurred at 9.45 o’clock at the main Public Works sub-station at Waingawa, when an explosion in the main switch gear blew out all the protecting apparatus and the fuses. It appears that the mouse, having made its way into the system, made contact and created an arc, which quickly generated gases. These exploded and effectively cut off the power on the'llo,000 volt system throughout the district. The sub-station’s telephone fuses were also blown, out. Public Works and Wairarapa Power Board employees were quickly on the scene and power was restored, to the South Wairarapa within 17 minutes of the failure by transferring the load to the Moroa sub-station. The rest of the district, including Masterton, had the power restored one hour 33 minutes after the failure, when conditions were back to normal.
