OF THE DONETZ RIVER ■ « FORCED BY RUSSIANS. POSSIBLE STARTING POINT FOR OFFENSIVE. LONDON, May 17. By forcing another crossing of the River Donetz, in Ihe Ukraine, the Russians have established an additional bridgehead on the western bank of the river. Moscow despatches state that this gives the Soviet forces a good starting point for a possible offensive against the industrial Donetz area. In the Kuban there is still a struggle for individual heights, roads and supply bases. North-east of Novorossisk Russian artillery continues to pound the German defences.
