FEATHERSTON

PRAYERS FOR VICTORY UNITED SERVICE HELD. (“Times-Age” Special.) The people of Featherston were present in large numbers at the Town Hall last evening for the Wartime United Service, when they joined in the Em- ' pire thanksgiving celebrations for the victory of the Allied arms in North Africa. The speaker was Major Enders, Field Director of the American Red Cross Society, who spoke on the need, both now and after the war ,of practising Christianity throughout the whole of society if a new world were to arise out of the present holocaust. The vicar of Featherston (the Rev. J. R. Higgs) presided, and the Rev. H. Bloomfield (Presbyterian) read the lesson. The Home Guard, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides paraded, and the musical part of the service was ably led by the combined choirs under the conductorship of Mr F. Clarke. j POST OFFICE BUILDING TO BE VACATED. The Featherston Post Office has been condemned on account of damage by earthquake. Arrangements have been made to transfer the staff to a vacant shop opposite the present building. Mr Cudby, buildings overseer of the Property Division of the General Post Office, Wellington, has a gang of four carpenters, who are now busy renovating Mrs Herbert’s property, opposite the P. 0., which will be used as temporary premises until the new Post Office is built. Patriotic Dance. The Town Hall was again crowded, when the Patriotic Dance Committee held a succesful dance on Saturday night. The music was supplied by Len Daysh’s orchestra, and extras were played by Misses C. Saba, K. Hayman, Private Chaplaw and Mr M. Benton. Mr P. Habib made a capable M.C. A Monte Carlo competition was won by Mesdames L. McGarvie and Rasmussen. A box of chocolates was won by E. Midgley. The Junior Patriotic Committee was responsible for serving supper. Golf. A medal handicap, played on the Gum Grove links, resulted: Miss O. Nix and W. H. Rowles. 21 points; H. R. Bloxam- and L. G. Benton, J point. Personal. Miss Joan Hunter, of Manaia, is home for a week’s holiday. Mrs K. H. Allen, Bulls, is visiting Featherston, and is the guest of Mrs Sharp. COSY THEATRE “TWO YANKS IN TRINIDAD.” Plenty of action and laughter is depicted in “Two Yanks in Trinidad,” showing at the Cosy Theatre on Wednesday night. Pat O’Brien, Brian Donlevy and Janet Blair take the leading parts.
