THRUST INTO INDIA

BY JAPANESE COLUMNS REPORTED BY ROME RADIO. SUCCESSFUL ALLIED AIR RAIDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, May 15. The Rome radio stated that two Japanese columns, advancing from Maungdaw, have deeply penetrated into Indian territory in the direction of Cox’s Bazaar and Chakiria, a supply base 46 miles south-east of Chittagong. An India communique,- following upon the announcement yesterday that the British had withdrawn from Maungdaw, states: “There is nothing to report from the Arakan front. Yesterday R.A.F. Hurricanes machinegunned Japanese troops and water transport in the Buthedaung area. Other fighters attacked shipping off Ramree Island and supply sampans on the Kalandan River. Last night our medium bombers attacked the Kangaung aerodrome. Bombs were seen to burst in the target area and fires were left burning. From these operations all of our planes returned.”
