PERSONAL

Among New Zealanders serving with the forces in the Middle East who were recently mentioned in despatches is Private Archie V. Carswell, of “Bridge Creek,” Bideford. Cabled advice has been received of the marriage on Easter Monday at the Presbyterian United Church, Winnipeg, of Margaret, daughter of Mr and Mrs Hoey, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to Murray William, R.N.Z.A.F., eldest son of Mr and Mrs Ross Jackson, Wangaehu, Masterton. The death occurred suddenly in Wellington on Tuesday of Mr Alfred Lewis who for many years was chief messenger to successive Prime Ministers. Mr Lewis, who was in his sixty-sixth year, was on his way to his work at Parliament House when he collapsed, being found dead in his motor-car near the junction of Hawker Street and Majoribanks Street. Mr Lewis’s association with New Zealand Prime Ministers began with the late Mr Massey.

The death occurred yesterday morning of Colonel James William Hutchen, C.M.G., C.8.E., Eastbourne, who in recent years has been in charge of the war graves division of the Internal Affairs Department, and has also acted as check officer for that department in connection with art unions. He was born in Wellington in 1880 and was educated at the Terrace School and Wellington College, gaining a commission in the College Rifles 40 years ago. For a time he was associated with insurance accountancy in Wellington, but when war broke out in 1914 he was among the first to enlist and he saw service with the N.Z.E.F. in Egypt and on Gallipoli. The death occurred in Martinborough recently of Mr John .Lamb, at the age of 68 years. The late Mr Lamb was born in the Ashburton district and for some time engaged in farming pursuits at Mount' Pleasant. Later he came to the Martinborough district, and took up property at Longbush. Some years ago he retired to live in Martinborough. Of a genial disposition he made a wide circle of friends. He was a prominent member of the Martinborough Bowling Club and a faithful adherent of the Presbyterian Church. He is survived by a widow and two sons.
