- SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEW HEAD TEACHER APPOINTED. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Pirinoa School Committee was held on Monday. There were present Messrs Mclntosh. Sutton. Duggan and Carter. The Wellington Education Board notified that Mr Scott, of Pahiatua, had been appointed head teacher and would commence his duties at the commencement of the next term.
The secretary reported that he had written to Miss Harvey, the retiring head teacher, expressing the committee's regret at her continued illness and wishing her a speedy recovery. Correspondence was received from the Wellington Education Board returning the committee’s books, duly audited, and complimenting the secretary on the manner in which the books were kept. Accounts were passed totalling £l9. Patriotic Dance. There was a good attendance at the patriotic dance on Thursday evening. The prizes for the euchre tourney were won as follow: —Ladies, Mrs Taylor 1, Mrs Bragg 2. Men, Mr E. Nutt 1, Mr H. Tawihi 2. Consolation, Mrs Priest and Mr T. Edwards. Mystery parcel, Mrs Hall (Carterton); order. Miss Judith Spicer. The Monte Carlo competition was won by Miss Watson and Mr Taylor. The dance music was supplied by Ashton's Orchestra, extras being played by Misses Carter and Te Whaiti. Mr S. Mclntosh was M.C. Women’s Institute. The Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting on Tuesday. There was a good attendance. The delegates reported on the proceedings held at Carterton recently. It was decided to hold a dance on a date to be arranged. Personal. Miss Ellen Tilson, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs J. H. Tilson, Pallister Bay, has commenced duties with a W.A.A.C; unit. Mr Ben Atkinson is visiting relatives in Christchurch. Mr G. J. Gillies has returned from the South Island. Miss Fisher, Carterton, was the guest of Mrs Rangi over the weekend. Mr Duncan Didsbury, who has been visiting relatives in this district, has returned to the South Island. ‘ Miss Makere Hutana, of the Pukeora Hospital nursing staff, is visiting her mother, Mrs Bragg. Mrs Jas Duggan, Senr., who recently underwent an operation, has returned home. Mr anod Mrs D. Tikao, who spent Easter with relatives in the South Island. have returned home. Private Watene is staying with Mr and Mrs Waiwera. Mr E. Nutt, Masterton, is spending a few days t here as the guest of Mr and Mrs Hutchison. The sympathy of many friends in this district is extended to Mrs A. Hall, Carterton, in the sad news received recently of the death of her husband in action in Crete. Miss Jean McDougall is staying with her aunt, Miss N. McDougall. Mr and Mrs Baker, who were residents here for some months, have transferred to another district. Miss Miriam Lovegrove, of the local post office, is on annual leave. W. and G. Tilson, from Nelson, arc spending the school holidays with their parents. Mr Honeston, Petone, was a visitor here for a few days. Miss Mary Riwai is spending the school vacation with her parents. Mr J. Smart has returned to Pahiatua. Mrs Carter and her children are the guests of Mrs Himona, Masterton, for a few days. Mr Scott, lately of the Kaitawa School, Pahiatua, has been appointed head teacher at the local school. Mr and Mrs Scott and family will arrive here this week.
