BUTHIDAUNG LOST
WITHDRAWAL IN NORTH-WEST BURMA. AIR ATTACKS ON ENEMY CONTINUED. ‘ (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, May 9. British troops in Burma have withdrawn from Buthidaung, in the Mayu area, and have moved north and west from the town. It is stated officially that the operation was carried out without any interference from the Japanese. A hint that some such move might be expected was given in yesterday’s announcement that the enemy had got astride the Mayu-Buthidaung road and was developing a direct threat to our positions in the Buthidaung area. A raid by R.A.F. Blenheims started eight fires at a place north of Akyab, and last night Wellingtons attacked a railway station near Mandalay. Further south United States bombers made a damaging attack on railway yards at dropping 15 tons of bombs, which started large fires, and other American aircraft were over railway yards and bridges last night. One of the latter attacks was made bjr planes from Assam, carrying 10001 b, bornbs.
