OBITUARY

VISCOUNT HEWART. FORMER LORD CHIEF JUSTICE OF ENGLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, May 5. Viscount Hewart, P.C., Lord Chief Justice of England from 1922 to 1940, is dead, aged 73. Lord (Gordon) Hewart held the position of Lord Chief Justice for a longer period than any other. The appointment is made for a term of 15 years, and in his case was renewed for another 15. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Sara Wood Riley, of his native town, Bury, who died in 1933; his second, the present Lady Hewart, was Miss Jean Stewart, Wanganui. The eldest son of the first marriage was killed in the Great War, and the second son, Vaughan, is the heir to the title.
