AIR ATTACKS
ON JAPANESE POSITIONS
IN NORTH AND SOUTH PACIFIC. SUCCESSFUL AMERICAN OPERATIONS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 1.15 p.m.) RUGBY, May 5. United States Army planes on Monday carried out nine attacks on Japanese installations on Kiska, states a United States Navy Department communique. Three fires were started in the enemy main camp area and hits were observed in many areas. Heavy smoke was seen at the North Head.
The communique adds: “During May 4, Warhawk Wildcat fighters bombed and strafed Japanese positions at Vanga Vanga and the Ring Cove on Kolomneangara Island. Avengers and Dauntless bombers, with a Corsair escort, followed up with bombing and strafing. A fire was started at Vanga Vanga and smoke was observed in the Ring Cove area. All the United States planes returned. “Flying Fortresses attacked Vila and Rekata Bay, starting a fire in the latter area.”
