Mr. J. H. Terry, Frankton Junction, has been elected president of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. Miss Zeta McPherson, daughter of Mr and Mrs R; McPherson, Perry Street, Masterton, left on Monday to join the W.A.R.N.Z.N. Mr A. M. Theed has been elected president, Mr H. H. Harold vice-presi-dent, and Mr E. Dickson secretary of the Akitio Returned Servicemen’s Association. Mr Eruera Tihama Tirikatene, M.P. for Southern Maori, is expected to be appointed to the Executive Council as Minister representing the Maori race in succession to the late Mr P. K. Paikea. The death occurred at Auckland on Tuesday of Mrs. Margaret (Pearl) Rayner, wife of Mr. Henry Crisp Rayner, Green Lane, and daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Bassett, of Carterton. The funeral took place at Auckland today. The death occurred at the Wellington Hospital yesterday of Mr “Moot” Cottle, only son of the late Mr “Ted” Cottle, of Moonshine Valley, Upper Hutt. The late Mr Cottle was a popular figure at meetings of South African veterans here in Masterton, being an exceptionally gifted siffleur and pianist, and a rich-voiced soloist as well. He was a member of the R.S.A., having left with a fairly early draft of the expeditionary force, returning in apparent good health, but his death occurred at the half-century mark after a long illness. His people rank among the earliest pioneers of the Hutt Valley and Wellington, and after whom Cottleville Terrace, Thorndon, was named, whilst in Kopuaranga and other parts of this district the name is well preserved.
