FISHING & SHOOTING

ACCLIMATISATION AFFAIRS NORTH WAIRARAPA BRANCH ANNUAL REPORT. OF MASTERTON HATCHERIES. The annual report of the North Wairarapa branch of the Acclimatisation Society states: “The fishing season has been very disappointing from an anglers’ point of view, the rivers being in flood on a number of weekends owing to rain in the ranges. Fish were very scarce in the rivers up till the end of April, when they started to run up the smaller streams and better baskets were obtained. “Masterton hatcheries: This committee views with concern that these hatcheries are still closed and an endeavour is being made to have them opened again. “Kororau Dam: This is very heavily stocked with fish but unfortunately a number of fish caught are full of worm. This matter has been taken up with the Wellington Society and an endeavour is to be made to remedy this.

“Shooting: The prospects of this season’s shooting are excellent, birds being plentiful but shooters are short of ammunition.

“During the season the committee and a number of sportsmen paid a surprise visit to the residence of Mr J. G. Miller, who was curator of the Masterton Hatcheries for a long number of years. The chairman, in making a presentation to Mr Miller of a beaten brass fire screen and to Mrs Miller of a hanging mirror, referred to the excellent service given by Mr and Mrs Miller while at the hatcheries. MiMiller, in replying, stated that his help and advice would always be available to the committee of the Wairarapa Society and thanked them for their kindly thoughts.

“We wish to thank those members of the committee, the press and various citizens for their valuable help over a difficult year.”

The report is signed on behalf of the North Wairarapa branch by Mr F. B. Pickering, chairman.
