FARMERS’ UNION
TINUI BRANCH ANNUAL MEETING PERSONNEL OF REHABILITATION BOARDS. NO FARMERS' REPRESENTATIVE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Tinui branch of the Farmers’ Union was held last night, Mr lan Speedy presiding over an attendance of 22 members.
The secretary, Mr R. H. Williams, was asked to arrange for the Government veterinarian to carry out T.B. tests of local house cows. The branch favoured the holding of the annual interprovincial conference at Palmerston North on May 27. A motion was passed asking that farmers should have adequate representation on rehabilitation boards. It was pointed out that there were no farmers on the Wairarapa Rehabilitation Board.
Some discussion took place regarding the discrepancy between the Government purchase price of land, the Government valuation , and valuation for probate purposes. It was agreed that these should be brought more into line.
Attention was drawn to the fact that there was only one farmers’ representative on the local Transport Co-ord-ination Committee and four from the carriers. Now the Minister concerned insisted on a drover being added to the committee. The farmers, it was stated, were asking for proportional representation. The transport operators only controlled 71 per cent of the trucks.
The meeting favoured the amalgamation of the Wairarapa Sheep Owners’ Federation and the Farmers’ Union. The election of officers resulted: — Chairman. Mr lan Speedy; vice-chair-man, Mr P. Andrew; committee, Messrs lan Speedy, P. Andrew, L. Meredith, James Andrew, F. Bartholomew; delegates to executive, Messrs lan Speedy, P. Andrew, James Andrew; delegates to Interprovincial Conference, Messrs lan Speedy and James Andrew.
Members of the Women's Division served supper. Mr George Moore spoke to ratepayers regarding the proposed establishment of a lime pit at Abbotsford.
