CARTERTON

BOWLING CLUB SEASON CLOSED. (“Times-Age'’ Special.) There was a large gathering of bowlers on Saturday afternoon, when the Carterton Bowling Club closed the season, including a rink from Masterton. The green played well and the day was fine. * Teams were picked to represent the president and vice-presi-dent. The vice-president’s teams won by 3 games and a draw (121 points) to 2 wins and a draw (104 points). It was a general tea day, supervised by Mesdames F. L Barr and E. T. Beaven and Miss Barber, to whom a hearty vote of thanks was accorded.

During the tea adjournment the president, Mr F. L. Barr, welcomed the visiting rink. He referred to the good season that had been experienced by members of the club, and instanced the fact that on one Saturday only during the season had play been stopped by rain. He thanked the committee ladies for attending to afternoon tea during the season, and the club’s greenkeepers for their untiring efforts in providing a good green at all times to play upon. He moved a vote of thanks to all concerned, this being carried by acclamation.

Mr Geo. Hayne, president of the Wairarapa Centre, thanked Mr Barr for the warm welcome given to the Masterton players. The following were the results of the games played, the rinks representing . the president being mentioned first in each instance;—Spooner, Hall, Simmonds, Barr (s), beat Clarke, Beaven, Newbould, Martin (s), 20/14; Mills, Hayne, Hendry, H. Reid (s) beat W. Hart, Bain, Hughan, Tucker (s), 24/11; Foss, McCarty, Riggs, Harris (s) lost to E. Smith, Colson, G. Hart, Barber (s), 10/33; E. H. Smith, Kilmister, Edwards, Harp (s) lost to Matson, Hawker, DeLacey, Whyte (s), 18/21; Mrs Adams, G.‘ Steven, Mrs Martin (s) lost to Mrs Swan, W. Foster, Mrs Colson (s), 14/24; A. Adams, Mesdames V. L. Robinson and A. Thompson (s) drew with H. Rayner, Misses Lamb and Armstrong (s), 18/18. In connection with the ladies’ bowling an enjoyable season was brought to a close by the presentation' of trophies by Mr Gordon Hughan. The following were the winners:—Champion singles rose bowi, Mrs Colson; champion pairs (Mrs B. Booth’s trophy and club ribbons): Mrs Martin and Miss Lamb; club pairs (club trophy): Mrs Colson and Miss Armstrong. It was announced that Mr G. Hughan had donated another trophy to be played for next season. Mrs Martin (president) thanked Mr Hughan for his generosity.

FARMERS’ UNION ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. The annual meeting of the Farmers’ Union was held in Carterton on Friday last, Mr A. E. Reid presiding over a fair attendance. Correspondence was read from Mr J. , Robertson, M.P., advising that the Rehabilitation Board was looking into the question of acquiring the Balfour Estate, Pahiatua, for rehabilitation of soldiers. A letter from the Manawatu Branch stated that the annual Interprovincial Conference would be held on May 27. , The meeting was of the opinion that ■ the usual one-day conference should be ! held. It was decided to ask for a reduction in transport charges for the cartage of lime. The secretary reported that the finances were in a very healthy condition, 1 and with cash in the P.O. Bank and ■ the war bonds there was a total of i £BOO. The prices for porkers and baconers were discussed, and it was decided that a remit be forwarded to the conference, asking for an increased price for winter fed pigs, otherwise the number of pigs raised next year will show a further fall on this year’s numbers. It was resolved that a remit be forwarded to the conference .asking that a chair of veterinary science be instituted at one of the Agricultural Colleges, and further, that Home Guardsmen be medically examined as to their fitness. J. Thomas, t E. R. Rose, E. T. Bliss and N. Peacock; delegates to conference, W. J. Thomas and E. T. Bliss.

Mr Bliss suggested that when members were appealing for their men, they should put their appeals through the Wairarapa Production Council. Personal Items. Mrs A. R. Tankersley, Pembroke Street, Carterton, has been notified that her husband, Signalman A. R. Tankersley, has been wounded in action in Africa. Mrs E. M. Gayfer, of Rhodes Street, Carterton, has received advice that her son, Pte. B. H. Gayfer, has been wounded in battle in Africa. Football. \ The football season in Carterton was opened at the Carrington Park grounds on Saturday when a Carterton fifteen met Masterton Old Boys and.defeated them by 8 points to nil. Mr Len Berry controlled the game. Card Tournament. The card tournament held by the Labour Party Social Committee on Saturday evening, was well attended. ■The prizes were won by Mesdames H. Hodder, A. Knutson, M. Parker and Mr A. Knutson. School Committee. The monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee will be held in the Holloway Street School at 7.30 o’clock tonight. REGENT THEATRE “MY FAVOURITE BLONDE” Bob Hope and Madeleine Carroll will be seen tonight in the brilliant comedy, “My Favourite Blonde.”
