HEAVY FIGHTING
> IN THE KUBAN TERRITORY SOVIET TROOPS PRESSING ATTACKS. ENEMY REACTING VIGOROUSLY. LONDON, May 2. The Russians are holding the initiative in the fighting for the Kuban Peninsula, opposite the Crimea. They are pressing forward in an effort to widen the wedges driven into the German-Rumanian defence lines. The Germans are reacting vigorously and much fighting is going on in country still waterlogged. Soviet bombers are systematically combing the country for German batteries.
