HASTWELLS

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS.

(“Times-Age" Special.)

Mrs K. Ngatuere presided over a fair attendance of members at a meeting of the Hastwells Women’s Institute held in the local hall on Wednesday. The president read an inspiring message on Anzac Day. She asked the members to especially remember the fallen of this war, and mention was made of a local soldier, Pte. W. Caseley, who, as a member of the Home Guard, could be placed among these. The members stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect to the memory of these soldiers. Mrs Dick gave an interesting account of the annual meeting held at Mangamutu. About 20 hot water bag covers were made up for the Red Cross Society. The winners in the competition for hot water bag covers in the senior section was won by Mrs E. Sigvertsen, with Mrs K. Ngatuere second and Miss O. Halberg third. In the junior section Miss E. Larsen was first, Miss I. Madsen second and Miss E. Dick third. About 7 balaclavas, 1 scarf, 1 pair of mittens, and 5 pairs of men’s knitted socks, made by those desirous of helping the war work, were on view. A game organised by Miss E. Larsen was won by Mrs K. Ngatuere and Miss 0. Halberg. The collection of four best vegetables was won by Mrs E. Sigvertsen, with Mrs Madsen second and Miss E. Larsen third.

During the afternoon presentations were made to Mrs Madsen (treasurer) and Miss Halberg (secretary) in recognition of their past services. Each recipient also received a shoulder spray and the president (Mrs K. Ngatuere) was presented with a posy. A competition in aid of the Soldiers’ Parcel Fund, and conducted by Mrs Madsen, was won by Mrs Dick. The motto given by Mrs Dick was: “The surest way not to fail is to determine to succeed.”
