MOTHERS AND SONS

SOCIAL EVENING IN Y.M.C.A. HALL.

DEMONSTRATIONS OF BOXING

There was a large attendance, presided over by Mrs H. E. Pither, at the social gathering arranged by the Y.M.C.A. Ladies’ Auxiliary last evening, when mothers and their sons spent a happy time in the Association’s hall. The departure from the usual “banquet” held in previous years proved quite successful and relieved considerably the work of the ladies in arranging for provisions, which is no small item, especially under the prevailing conditions of rationed commodities.

The programme submitted by the boys delighted the audience, those taking part being: Peter Downes, Brian and Owen Henson, Fraser Miller Hope, Brian Blackwood, John Jarvis, .Raymond Donovan, Robert Golder in musical items; Owen Prior and Jack Baily in elocution; and Peter Mason, an Auckland visitor, in songs. A special feature of the evening’s programme was an interesting talk on sport in the United States by Mr Roy Hampton, of boxing fame, and a practical demonstration of the art by two hefty exponents, Messrs Jimmie Gallardo and John Foster, of the U.S.M.C. Opportunity vzas taken by the general secretary, Mr Gaze, to introduce the newly-eelcted president for 194344, Mr J. A. Kennedy, who extended a welcome on behalf of the Association to the mothers and their sons. Mr Gaze thanked those who had assisted in the entertaining, and the ladies of the Auxiliary for sponsoring the function, at the same time extending a welcome to the boys present to link up with the association’s gymnasium activities.

Mrs Miller Hope played the accompaniments.
