Mrs R. Elsmore, Masterton, was the guest of Mrs Clements, Petone, during Easter.

Miss Kathleen and Joan Wood, of Greytown, spent the Easter holidays with Mrs L. Wood, 75 Bannister Street, Masterton.

Mr L. H. Spackman, of 80 Dixon Street, Masterton, whose death occurred suddenly yesterday morning, is survived by a widow, one son and two daughters, besides three brothers and one sister. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to the bereaved relatives in their loss.

Arising out of the appointment of Sir Francis Frazer as chairman of the Goods-Service Charges Tribunal, which was recently set up as part of the stabilisation procedure to review and fix road transport freight rates throughout the Dominion, it has been necessary for Sir Francis temporarily to relinquish the. chairmanship of the War Pensions Apeal Board. The. Acting Minister of Defence, Mr Fraser, announced last evening that Mr H. F. O'Leary, K.C., Wellington, and formerly of Masterton, had agreed to accept the chairmanship of the board during the temporary absence of Sir Francis. Mr Fraser said that he was pleased that Mr O'Leary, who occupied such an eminent position in the legal profession, was able to assume the duties of the position, which was becoming more important as the number of returned soldiers increased.
