GALLANT deed
OF PAHIATUA AIRMAN
FIERCE FIRE IN BOMBER.
EXTINGUISHED DURING ACTION ' ' IN BAY OF BISCAY.
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, April 27. Sergeant Edward H. Smith, of Pahiatua, wireless operator and air gunner, serving in the Canadian Hampden Squadron, distinguished himself during a daylight attack against a heavily escorted merchantman in the Bay of Biscay. Flak struck the petrol tank and holed the fuselage, resulting “in flames pouring out gs though coming from a blowlamp.” Sergeant Smith fought the flames for 45 minutes. The pilot said: “Even after he put the fire out, petrol seeped through the hole, and we were afraid it might be ignited by sparks from a damaged transmitter. Sergeant Smith thereupon sat over the hole to stop any more petrol coming out.” The Hampden eventually landed safely. Sergeant Smith has taken part in several torpedo attacks against German ships.
