Although he had received four shrapnel wounds in his back on the morning of October 27 he remained with his section until ordered to the R.A.P. After having his wounds dressed he returned to his section, and, although suffering great pain and unable to carry a pack on his back, his courage and devotion to duty and his cheerfulness was an inspiration and a fine example to his men.
