IMPROVEMENT IN PRICES
AT MASTERTON AUCTION SALE.
FAT SHEEP IN DEMAND. The Wairarapa stock and station agents report on their weekly Masterton sale yesterday as follows: —A medium entry of all classes of sheep came forward and were, offered to a representative bench of buyers. Tho fat sheep which were in short supply made values on a par with those ruling of late, while in the store section wethers and medium wether and ewe lambs showed an improvement in price. A total clearance was effected under the hammer, and the following list of principal sales will indicate values: —Fat Down 2-ths., 26s 6d; fat wethers, 25s 6d; light fat Downs, 22s 2d; fat ewes, 13s to 14s; light unfinished do., 10s 3d to Ils; 2-th. wethers, 19s 9d ; cull do., 14s 3d to 14s 7d; fat and forward b.f. 2-thS., 20s to 225; forward conditioned wethers, 21s; m.a. ewes, 8s 6d, 10s 6d to 14s; shorn ewe lambs, 10s 6d, 10s 9d, to 12s lOd; wether lambs, medium, 8s 6d, 9s to 9s 3d; medium woolly ewe lambs, 9s, 10s to 10s 6d. and was destroyed. A small vessel, probably a harbour boat, was also hit. Simultaneously the aerodromes at Wewak and Borun were bombed and neutralised, causing fires in the dispersal areas. Other Allied operations were confined to offensive reconnaissance.
The only offensive activity by the Japanese Air Force was a night raid by a single aircraft on Morobe, where two bombs were dropped without effect.
In the North Pacific American bombers yesterday made 15 more sorties against the Aleutian base of Kiska. A Japanese freighter was hit in the Solomons area.
HEAVY LOSSES OF JAPANESE SHIPPINGIN PACIFIC. SYDNEY, April 21. The total of Japanese shipping either sunk or damaged in the South-West Pacific area from August, 1942, to the end of March of this year was 754,280 tons. This is revealed in a statistical report just received. The details are: August, nil; September, 20,000 tons; October, 148,000; November, 129,500; December, 97,050; January, 184,100; February, 40,500; March, 105,130.
