OBITUARY
MR R. S. HIRSCHBERG. The death occurred at Khandallah on Wednesday of a former resident of Master ton in the person of Mr Rudolph Sigismund Hirschberg, at the age of 79 years. Mr Hirschberg was born at Greytown in 1864, his father being one of the pioneer storekeepers there. His name appears on the Grey town Baptismal roll of the Church of England in the year 1864, that of his brothers, Alex. Mauritz and William James in 1860 and 1862, respectively, and that of their sister, Alice Jane, in the year 1862. Mr R. S. Hirschberg was for many years on the staff of the Bank of Australasia in Masterton, and was later an official in the Income Tax Department in Wellington, but had lived in retirement for some years. While in Masterton he was a prominent footballer, having played for the Masterton seniors and for the Wairarapa representatives, being a brilliant threequarter. His brothers, William and Gustave were also noted Wairarapa footballers. He was a keen horticulturist. He was a prominent official of the old Masterton Horticultural Society and a prolific prize-winner at shows. He leaves a widow.
