LEAGUE OF MOTHERS
GIRL GUICE MOVEMENT ORIGIN AND GROWTH EXPLAINED ADDRESS BY COMMISSIONER. The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held in the Knox Hall yesterday afternoon. Mrs Maunsell, who presided, welcomed a large attendance of members and friends. Several new members were enrolled. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Mcßae, Kellie, Major, Blackwood, Corskie and Ogilvie. As a mark of sympathy with Mesdames Taylor, Engstrom and Willoughby; all of whom had suffered bereavements, members stood in silence for a few moments.
Mrs Marchbank, who is the League representative on the Patriotic Committee, gave a report of the work done by that committee, and asked for volunteers to knit the wool that is in hand.
The choir rendered two very pleasing items. The speaker for the meeting was Mrs R. Coates, of Auckland, who is Commissioner for Post Guides. Mrs Coates spoke in a most interesting way on the origin and growth of the Girl Guide Movement, commending it to parents as being a definite help in the bringing up of their daughters. When choosing a name for the sister movement of the Scouts, the late Lord Baden Powell said that as the girls would be the mothers of the future, they would need to be “Guides’.’ in the true sense of the word. The future of the world was in the’ hands of youth, continued Mrs Coates, and guiding played a. very big part in training girls to be self-reliant and practical and happy in the service of others. Mrs Maunsell, in thanking Mrs Coates for her very interesting talk, remarked that it would be very good if youth could return to the simple and wholesome outdoor pleasures as afforded by Guiding.
The tea hostesses were Mesdames Kent-Johnston, Bull, Taylor, Norman and Renner.
The annual church parade will be held in St. Matthew’s Church at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 9. ,
