Princess Elizabeth’s Birthday.

The flags were flying on Government buildings in Masterton today in honour of the birthday of Princess Elizabeth.

Fall From Horse.

Mr Norman Page, of “Tanglewood,” Masterton .fell off a horse and was admitted to the Masterton Hospital yesterday afternoon with head injuries. His condtion is reported to be satisfactory.

Improved Finances. Favourable comment on the improved position of the gas finances was passed at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council. For the financial year ending March 3, 1943, the receipts, totalling £24,761, showed an increase of £2,315 on those of the previous financial year. Sentence Varied. Raymond John Watts, aged 30, who was recently sentenced to three years and three months hard labour for failure to account, theft and corruptly accepting a gift of money, has had his sentence varied by the Court of Appeal to three years and three months’ reformative detention.

Accident to Cyclist. A member of the Marine Corps was knocked down by a motor car driven by Mr E. B. Bengston, of Carterton, a mile north of Carterton, on the main highway, at 7 o’clock last night. The Marine was admitted to the Masterton Hospital last night with lacerated wounds to -the thigh. His condition is stated to be satisfactory.

Two Airmen Injured. Two members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force engaged in flying training received injuries when an aircraft struck a tree in the vicinity of a South Island air station on Monday, and were admitted to hospital. Flying Officer Herbert Elmer Lorraine Pickering, Ashburton, was classified as dangerously ill, and Leading Aircraftman Huia Chetwyn Parker, Epsom, was classified- as not seriously injured.
