CARTERTON
BOROUGH AFFAIRS MEETING OF COUNCIL. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr D. L. Taverner (Mayor) presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council last evening. There were also present: Councillors E. McKenzie, W. A. Hart-, H. Mortensen,
L. M .Clark, C. J. DeLacey, Howard E. Jackson and Miss Wolters. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors C. E. Stevens and W. R. Harry. The treasurer’s statement showed a cr. balance in the District Fund of £172 9s sd, and in the Gasworks A/c. of £313 15s 9d.
The Carterton District High School’s application that the roadway at the entrance to the school be tarred and sanded was refused, as tarring work for the present season had been completed. The Sanitary Inspector reported that ten samples of milk had been taken, eight of which were satisfactory. The N.Z. Breweries Ltd., Welling-1 ton, wrote stating that they were prepared to dedicate land for the purpose { of a new street between Belvedere j Road and Broadway. The Works Committee’s recommendation that the council purchase a piece of land in addition to that already been given by Messrs Masson and Co., Ltd., for the purpose of opening a new street at a price of £125 was endorsed.
It was decided that the owners of properties in Kent Street served by the water-races on the northern boundary of their sections be asked to assist the borough in keeping the races clean. It was resolved that the waterraces in the borough be cleaned, after which such work will be charged to property owners who fail to keep them clean.
An application by Mr C. K. Goodin for a new water service to his business premises was granted on the usual conditions.
It was decided that a complaint regarding the unnecessary noise made by a motor cycle be handed to the authorities to deal with.
It was resolved that Mr B. Roberts, M.P., be written to asking him to endeavour to have the railway station yard road improved. The Borough Bouncil would be prepared to tar seal it.
Councillor Wolters, secretary to the Carterton Library Committee, submitted a balance sheet in connection with the library. During the past year £lO4 had been expended in new books. It was resolved that the clerk forward a letter to the building contractor who is carrying out earthquake repairs at the P. and A. Society’s building, drawing his attention to the fact that the work had been commenced without a permit having been first obtained.
The council protested against a letter received from the Wairarapa South County Council concerning the state of the borough water races. The Clerk reported that the borough balance sheet for the financial year ended March 31, 1942, had been returned from the audit office as correct, no tags being attached. The Clerk was congratulated in connection therewith.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
_ ' MEETING AT PARKVALE. At the monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute a social gathering was held to commemorate the 7th birthday of the institution. Miss 0. Wolters presented the points prizes won during the year. Mesdames R. Gallon and Groube judged the monthly competitions, the following being the results: —Seniors: Shrubs, Mrs R. Williams 1, Mrs N. Personal Items. Mrs Billington, of Rhodes Street, Carterton, yesterday received word that her husband, L.A.C. J. F. Billington, had arrived at his destination fit and well.
Mr and Mrs E. A. Pankhurst left Carterton on Monday to spend a month’s holiday in the South Island. Mr and Mrs C. J. DeLacey, who spent an enjoyable fortnights’ holiday in Hawera, have returned home. Mr and Mrs A. Tinsley, Kent Street. Carterton, who have been visiting Napier, returned home yesterday. Miss Joan Beere, of Carterton, left yesterday to join an Air Force camp as a driver. She, was successful in obtaining her heavy traffic driver’s licence.
The many friends of Miss Zelma Wales, Kent Street, Carterton, who is a patient in the Wellington Public Hospital, will be pleased to hear that she is making a good recovery after her recent severe illness.
Football Club Meeting.
The annual meeting of the Carterton Football Club will be held on Thursday evening in the Bandroom at Broadway commencing at 7.30 p.m. REGENT THEATRE “THE VANISHING VIRGINIAN.” Tonight’s programme will be headed by the outstanding drama, “The Vanishing Virginian,” in which Frank Morgan, Kathryn Grayson and Spring Byington have the leading roles.
