Mr and Mrs Kemble Welch, of Masterton, are visiting Auckland. Mrs A. S. Wilder, Hawke’s Bay, is the guest of Miss J. McLaren, Renall Street, Masterton. Mr W. H. Kindle has been elected president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce for the ensuing year.

Trooper D. McMinn has returned to camp after having spent leave with his parents, Mr and Mrs W. McMinn, Lansdowne.

Advice has been received by Mr J. McLachlan, Cornwall Street, Masterton, that his son, Pilot Officer I. J. McLachlan, D.F.M., has been promoted to the rank of Flying Officer.

Mr E. E. Brooking, past president of the Wellington Association, has been unanimously elected president of the New Zealand United Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association.

The chairman of the gas committee, Councillor A. D. Low, was nominated as a member of the general executive of the New Zealand Gas Institute, at last nights’ meeting of the Masterton Borough Council. The engagement is announced of Mary Patricia, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs S. J. W. Gill, of Masterton, to Corporal Charles O. McCord, U.S.M.C., only son of the late Mr McCord and Mrs F. E. Matheny, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. Mr M. M. Simpson, who has been Postmaster at Masterton for the past four and a half years, recently completed forty-three years’ service with the Post and Telegraph Department. It is understood that the question of Mr Simpson’s retirement was under consideration recently, but the Government has decided that he is to remain in the service for the time being. Mr J. V. Dolan, caretaker of the Municipal Buildings, wrote to the Masterton Borough Council, at its meeting last night, tendering his resignation on account of ill-health. The matter was held over by the council, and Mr Dolan was granted three months’ leave of absence. The chairman of the hall committee, Councillor G. D. Wilson, paid a tribute to Mr Dolan’s service over the past 17 years, and said that he had been an exemplary servant to both the council and the public. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, and other councillors endorsed Councilor Wilsons’ remarks.
