NO LIGHT TASK
“YORKSHIRE POST” SUPPORTS MR CURTIN. “COMMON SENSE UTTERANCE.” (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, April 19. Mr Curtin’s statement that Australia accepted the Allied global strategy but did not accept a flow of war materials which was inadequate for a holding war, is commended by the “Yorkshire Post” in a leading article. “This is a common sense utterance, which ought to leave little room' for further debate,” says the paper. “A holding war in the Southern Pacific is all the Allies can probably expect to fight at present. However, that in itself is no light task. Strenuous efforts will be needed to prevent the Japanese getting any closer to Australia. It may be impossible to send General MacArthur all the assistance he would like, but it should be considered essential to send him steady supplies of aircraft to keep the determined and resourceful Japanese at arms length until the day comes when a crushing offensive against them can be prepared.”
