, UPPER PLAIN MEETING. TRADING SCHEME TO CONTINUE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Upper Plain Women’s Institute was held at the residence of Mrs Gillespie, Kibblewhite Road. Mrs Laing, the newlyelected president, occupied the chair. It was decided that two parcels be forwarded to soldiers overseas. It was reported that lOOlbs. of potatoes had been grown for the potato competition. The heaviest individual crop was grown by Miss McKenzie. A circular was received from Mrs Horn, secretary of the Dominion Federation, setting out particulars of the North Island Conference to be held at Gisborne in July. A bring and buy stall will be held at the May meeting, the proceeds from which will go towards paying the delegates boarding expenses at the conference. It was decided to continue with the trading scheme, and the treasurer handed a shilling to each member. Several completed garments were handed in to be sent to the country women's branch of the Red Cross Society. Mrs W. Taplin was awarded first in the cooking competition, and in the best bloom competition Mesdames W. Taplin and Mannell tied for first place. At the next meeting Mrs S. J. Munn will give a demonstration on the making of a cretonne covered workbox. Mesdames Tankersley and Skeet will act as hostesses. The competitions will be: Best chrysanthemum and chocolate sponge.
