MAURICEVILLE

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE SUCCESSFUL SHOP DAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The shop day held on Saturday afternoon under the auspices of the Mauriceville District Women’s Institute at Mauriceville West was officially opened by Mr J. L. McArley, a veteran soldier of the Great War. In the course of his remarks Mr McArley said that those present would appreciate the main object of the gathering—the acquisition of funds to provide parcels for district soldiers serving overseas. Consequently, he felt sure that none of those present would regret their decision to support the effort which was being made that day by the Women’s Institute. Personally,, he had experienced the delight in the last war at having received parcels when at the front from friends and relatives in New Zealand. He could assure them that the soldiers receiving the parcels would deeply appreciate the kindness which prompted the sending of those gifts. The gathering was a most enjoyable and successful one. Mrs Baine (president), speaking on behalf of the Women’s Institute, expressed her appreciation of the excellent support given to the gathering that day. She warmly thanked those present for having purchased goods so freely, and the donors who had generously given to the gathering in money or kind. She also desired to acknowledge the splendid service rendered by a number of ladies and men in assisting at the shop day, and through whose efforts such a successful result had been obtained. The competitions resulted as follows: Sheep judging, ladies, Mrs O. Mortensen; men, Mr F. Pain; cake, Mr J. Anderson; pudding, Mr J. L. McArley; dinner, Mr T. Mulligan; groceries, Mrs F. Cameron; chain, stepping, ladies, Mrs Stack; men, Mr F. Pain. Red Cross Sub-Centre. Residents who desire to assist the local Red Cross Sub-Centre in the matter of sewing or knitting can receive the necessary materials from the distributing depot, care of Mrs Milner.
