WAR AT SEA

AMERICA NOW HAS SEVEN FLEETS DISCLOSURE BY COLONEL KNOX ALLIED FORCE IN SOUTH-WEST PACIFIC. (By Telegraph— Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, April 17. At a Press conference the Secretary of the Navy, Colonel Knox, said that a South-West Pacific Fleet, composed of Australian and American units, commanded by Vice-Admiral Arthur Carpenter, had been in existence for some time. The American Navy, which started the war with three fleets, now had seven. Though Colonel Knox declined to give the locations of these, previous announcements indicate the existence of Atlantic, Pacific, South Atlantic, South Pacific, South-West Pacific and European fleets. The reorganisation of the United States Navy into seven fleets and the assignment of one fleet to Australia have prompted the belief in Washington that strong naval reinforcements may be sent to bolster up General MacArthur’s campaign, according to the United Press Association correspondent. It is speculated whether such increased naval forces would be used in connection with the aerial reinforcements promised by Mr Stimson.
