Poppy Day Appeal.

The response in Masterton today to the Poppy Day appeal is reported to have been excellent. Throughout the day collectors were busy canvassing the business and residential area and from their reports it is anticipated that the results will be well up to last year’s figures. St. John Ambulance Dance. In the Masonic Hall, Masterton, tomorrow night, the St. John Ambulance Brigade will hold a dance in aid of the brigade’s funds. In view of the good work carried out by the brigade, a large attendance is anticipated. The music will be supplied by Barnes’s Orchestra, and novelty dances will be a feature of the evening. Good Potato Crop . An exceptionally fine crop of potatoes, Aaron’s Consol, has been grown on the property of Mr Harry Evans, Upper Plain. Some of the potatoes are on view in the office of the Wairarapa Primary Production Council, Masterton. The crop as a whole was reported to be a fine" healthy one, comparing favourably with any so far seen this season. Easter Holidays. The Easter closing hours for shops were determined by the Masterton Retailers Association at a meeting held this morning. The hours decided on were: Shops to close at 9 p.m., on Thursday next, and to reopen on the following Tuesday at the usual hour. Bakers will open on Saturday. Butchers’ shops will be closed on Monday, May 3, in lieu of the Anzac Day holiday. Youths and Military Training. The National Service Department notifies that the following position now obtains with regard to the eighteen and nineteen-year age-group:—Youths in this age-group who have been called up for service by ballot but have not yet been mobilised, will not be called 1 upon for camp until subsequent to the attainment of the age of twenty, except where they have volunteered for Air Force or Naval service. Youths attaining the age of eighteen will likewise not be called upon for full-time j mobilisation.
