The Greytown Fire Brigade received ■ a call shortly after 7 o’clock this morn- ■ ing to a fire which had broken out in • Pope’s sawmill just south of the Railway Station. The fire started in the ’ engine room and although all hands were at work at the time the flames ’ spread rapidly and the whole structure 5 was soon on fire. As there is no high ’ pressure water supply available the brigade had to concentrate on stopping the spread of the fire to the timber stacks. The whole building was destroyed and the machinery dam- ’ aged by the heat. The explosion of , several drums of oil caused the firefighters to retire at intervals. Fortunately there was no wind and the fire 1 was under Control by 9 o’clock. The ; plant was insured for £lOOO, but Mr . W. J. Pope will be a heavy loser.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE 5 — 5 SUB-DENTAL CLINIC AREA. The monthly meeting of the Grey- . town District High School Committee , was held on Tuesday evening, there - being present: Messrs H. G. Carter . (chairman), F. Defines, W. Grigg, -R. , O’Neale, H. C. Trotman, L. R. Huntley, • E. Galyer, Mrs Knell (secretary), and > the headmaster, Mr S. C. Shedden. The headmaster reported that £6l had been received for the potatoes • sold. The Department of Health wrote sta- ’ ting that Greytown and Martinborough had been made a sub-dental clinic area, - and in future the nurse would- operate • between these two centres only. The headmaster reported as follows: —Present roll number, primary, 293; ; secondary, 41. Swimming certificates ’ were gained by 80 pupils as follows: —

’ 25 yards, 12 boys, 14 girls; 50 yards, 11 ’ boys, 9 girls; 220 yards, 5 boys, 6 girls; 880 yards, 10 boys, 13 girls. ’ A letter signed by the settlers at ; Ahikouka asking for a bus service to take children to school was received. The committee decided to forward the ' letter to the Education Board. It was pointed out that the main highway was particularly dangerous for small children to travel over. An application to form a Beekeeping Club at the school was held over for one month pending further enquiries. ( It was reported that Mr Drummond : (Education Board architect) visited the . school and authorised several urgent repairs. Mr H. C. Trotman informed the committee that he was unable to erect the new wood-shed as he was n’ot able to secure the necessary materials. It was decided to ask the Education Board to confer with the building controller on the matter. Personal Items, Mrs Keedwell, Senr., has returned

home after an extended holiday. Mr J. Robb is acting postmaster while Mr Maddison is on holidays. Messrs J. Lyford, K. Garrity and F. Skeet have left on a deer stalking trip to Mt. Holdsworth. It was decided to hold a working bee at the Park on Saturday and all willing to help are asked to attend. TOWN HALL “DIVE BOMBER” There will be a splendid programme shown tomorrow night headed by “Dive Bomber,” featuring Errol Flynn and Ralph Bellamy, and which provides thrilling entertainment.
