» Mr and Mrs C. J. Nix, “Waipoto,” Featherston, announce the engagement of their elder daughter, Maureen, to Robert Perry Pitts, Junr., U.S.M.C., elder son of Mr and Mrs Robert Pitts, of Adrian, Georgia, U.S.A. Miss Cecilia Keating, of Greymouth, who gained an Exhibition Scholarship in New Zealand in 1935, entitling her to attend the Royal College of Music, London, for two years, is now a violinist of some distinction in England. She has been touring munition factories, giving clasical concerts to workers.

The death occurred at her residence, Marke Street, Hastings, yesterday afternoon, of Mrs T. W. Lewis, says a Press Association telegram from Hastings. Well known for’ her philanthropic and patriotic work in the present and the last war, Mrs Lewis was a woman of considerable literary ability, and had written articles for women’s magazines. Lately she edited the New Zealand Red Cross Magazine.

The funeral of the late Mrs Alexander McKenzie took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon, the service at the residence and that at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. David McNeur. There was a large attendance of mourners. Wreaths were sent by the president and members of the Wairarapa Grain and Seed Merchants’ Association, the management and staff of the Wairarapa Steam Laundry, and by many private sympathisers. Messrs R. McKenzie, R. Hills, C. Rasmussen and M. Nielsen were the pall-bearers. At the residence of Mrs MacDonald, South Road, Masterton, on Saturday night, Miss Joan MacErlich, who is shortly to commence training at the Napier Public Hospital, was the guest of honour at a most enjoyable party. Games and competitions were held and supper was provided by the hostess. Miss MacErlich received many parting gifts, which she gratefully acknowledged. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow” brought the gathering to a close.

There was a representative attendance of members of the building trade and other citizens at the funeral in Masterton yesterday afternoon of the late Mr P. G. Rose. The Rev. I. C. Edwards conducted the service at the residence and also officiated at the cemetery. The many wreaths included those from the following: Officers and members of Stonehenge Lodge U.A.0.D., chairman, members and staff, Masterton Trust Lands Trust; Mr R. E. Baker and staff; Masterton Master Builders’ Association; Messrs Pickering Bros., and Messrs Booth and Co., Ltd., Carterton. The pall-bearers were Messrs E. Jenkins, W. Petty, F. Petersen, W. Seely, R. Pawson and F. Pickering, the last two representing the Druids’ Lodge.
