GENERAL MACARTHUR
GETTING NEAR RETIRING AGE
BUT LIKELY TO CARRY ON. /
DESIRE TO BE LIBERATOR OF PHILIPPINES.
(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) NEW YORK, April 13.
Although General MacArthur reaches retirement age next January, he is not to retire, says the newspaper “P.M.” Official action has not yet been taken, but there is no doubt in military circles in Washington that President Roosevelt will issue the necessary order, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief. Officers who have returned from Australia are convinced that General MacArthur has received an assurance from official quarters that he need not worry about being summarily retired when he reaches the age of 64. There is a sentimental angle, too. General MacArthur has set heart upon . being the liberator of the Philippines. “Military men will give you odds,” says the paper, “that when the time arrives General MacArthur will lead them.”
