THROWN INTO GAOL

AMERICAN CORRESPONDENT IN TUNISIA BY GENERAL MONTGOMERY’S ORDER. ANGER AT “UTTER FALSITY” OF CHARGES. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) NEW YORK, April 13. General Montgomery has sent Mr Frank Kluckhorn, “Nev/ York Times” Tunisia correspondent, to gaol for ten days. Mr Drew Pearson, reporting this, says: “Kluckhorn impugned the motives of British military leaders. He tried to 'send a message, for his editor's information, to the effect that the British were using other troops to do the dirty work in Tunisia, so that they could march up the coast victoriously. It is suggested in Washington that Kluckhorn heard this tale from some disgruntled French or American soldiers. The censor caught the message and referred it to General Montgomery. Incensed and infuriated at ‘the utter falsity’ of the story, General Montgomery is reported to have said: ‘They call me a martinet; well this time I will behave like one,’ so he threw Kluckhorn into gaol.”
