EKETAHUNA

GIRL GUIDES VISIT OF COMMISSIONER. (“Times-Age” Special.) On Saturday afternoon Mrs McKenzie, District Commissioner of Masterton, visited Eketahuna to enrol the Guides. Mrs Christie, president of the Girl Guide Committee, welcomed Mrs McKenzie and Miss Ractlift'e. She also mentioned the gratification of the committee at the leadership of the Guides being taken over by Mrs Campbell Raleigh, and also the temporary leadership of the Brownies. She said, that Miss Sybil Walton would be the Tawny Owl. The Guides Had done a great deal of work for the stall, from the proceeds of which a donation was to be made to the Ladies’ Patriotic Society. Mrs McKenzie expressed her pleasure at being present, though she could not come very often. The enrolment then commenced. Patrol Leader Cora Davie presented Beryl Neal, Dawn Farrow and Nancy Petersen. Verna Cooper presented Lois Bowering, Beverley O’Brien and Joan Farrow. Isobel Waterreus presented Margaret Hart, Audrey Brown, and Alison Houlbrooke, and ’Muriel Gray presented Coralie Cooper, Jocelyn Lineker and Audrey Johanson. Momi Farrow was presented- with her Proficiency Badge, 2nd class. Four 2nd class Guides were then awarded the badges which they had gained. These Guides, Muriel Gray, Verna Cooper, Cora Davie and Isobel Waterreus gained their cyclist, child nurse, needlewoman and cook’s badges. Verna Cooper had also passed her elementary home nursing previously. Mrs McKenzie advised the Guides to remember their promise throughout their lives. They would then be better girls, better Guides and better citizens, a credit to the Guide movement, and to their country. Mrs McKenzie was presented by Isobel Waterreus with a floral gift made by Verna and Coralie Cooper. Afternoon tea was served. The musical and elocutionary items were as follow: —Song, Isobel Waterreus; recitations, Dawn Farrow and Muriel Gray; choruses by Guides and Brownies. Mrs Hart played the accompaniments. Mrs Raleigh, Guide captain, deserves much credit for the capable way in which she organised the ceremony and the entertainment. Personal Items. The many friends of Mr and Mrs Earle Ryan, of Auckland, and formerly

of Eketahuna, will regret to hear of the death of their youngest son, Keith, as the result, while cycling, of a collision with a motor lorry. Mr and Mrs F. Wise are visitors to Eketahuna and are staying at Liverpool House. Mrs Alexander, Wellington, is a guest at Liverpool House. Private Ist Class T. V. Smith, U.S.M.C., is the guest of Mr and Mrs C. H. Mills, Nireaha. Mrs G. G. L. Taylor, Cambridge, has been on a visit to Eketahuna, after an absence of 30 years. Her father, the late Mr Lewis, was a stationmaster at Eketahuna in the early nineties and was a lay-reader and prominent member of St. Cuthbert’s Church. Miss Edith Houlbrooke, Masterton, has been staying with her mother, Mrs L. Houlbrooke, Alfredton Road.
