UTILITY SUITS
SOME RESTRICTIONS FOUND NEEDLESS. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “The general public and the trades concerned will not be called upon to make sacrifices that do not effect a conservation of supplies and manpower sufficient to justify the restrictions or limitations involved,” stated the Minister of Supply (Mr Sullivan) today. On the basis of this policy, he added, the retention of restrictions on pockets and the length of turn-ups on sleeves of utility suits was not justified by actual experience. He said mock cuffs were now being permitted because they entailed little extra work or materials, and would still effect considerable savings on the customary full cuff. There had been a strong public reaction to the elimination of cuffs from trousers, he added. This long-estab-lished custom in men’s wear was apparently more than just a fashion, and expressions of opinion from various quarters which were widely representative of public had indicated that the total abolition of the cuff had caused more feeling than the restriction warranted.
