OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

FRIESIAN CATTLE SALE (To the Editor.) Sir,—A New Zealand soldier who was on leave in England attended the British Friesian cattle sale (attested herds) at Reading, Berkshire, and has sent to Carterton a few details which he considers might be of interest to Wairarapa breeders. The highest prices realised for cows were as follows: —On account of F. N, Terry: Chebbard Eclipse 2nd, born November 12, 1939; sire, Chebbard Ulfrits, dam Chebbard Eclipse, by Saracen’s David, grand dam, Chebbard Hillo Eclipse, by Brampton Hilko. 250 guineas. On account of T. E Castle: Curbridge VI., twin to a heifer born August 21. 1939. Sire, Peakland Fergus, dam Curbridge Pearl, by Rockwood Admiral, dam Curbridge June, by Mapleton Gladiator, 250 guineas. These were the two highest priced cows. One hundred and forty lots were offered, and the lowest price was 90 guineas. A heifer calf, ten days old, by Chebbard Goatsmaid 9th—Chebbard Double Anklod, brought 45 guineas. The highest prices for bulls were:— On a/c. of D. M. Hodges: Flintdave Conqueror, born November 12, 1941. sire Flinlock General, dam Flintlock Ifaannie, by Cerling Matrix, grand dam Flintlock Ifaannie, by Cerling Conqueror, 360 guineas. On a/c. G. J. Caddey: Egham Masterpiece, born August 6, 1941; sire, Lawford Pilot, dam Holyport Seven Myra 2nd, by Holyport Seven Caesar, grand dam Glyndebourne Myra sth, by Haydon Pilot, 220 guineas. The soldier did not give the lowest price for bulls. He states in his letter that Mr Terry exhibited a freak calf from his herd. It was a red and white striped animal. He also says that Mr Terry had a cow on exhibition that had broken all records —presumably under the British Friesian Society —by passing the 90,000 lb. mark. —I am, etc., T.Z.C. Carterton, April 12.
