Telephone Rentals. Telephone subscribers are reminded that Thursday is the last day for paying telephone rentals without a penalty being imposed. Yeung Farmers’ Club. At a meeting of the Masterton Young Farmers’ Club there were thirty-one members present. Mr Davies gave an interesting talk on shelter for stock and the most useful timbers on the farm. Supper was provided. Fire in Hedge. The Masterton Fire Brigade received a call by exchange at 10.59 a.m. yesterday to Mr A. Harcombe’s property at the corner of Devon and Donald streets where a tall macrocarpa hedge was on fire. The brigade soon put out the blaze. About twenty to thirty feet of the hedge was bui;nt. The fire was caused through a spark falling in the Hedge from a rubbish fire nearby. Theft of Gold Alleged. Leo Edward Morland appeared again in the Magistrate’s Court at Christchurch on Saturday, when the hearing of evidence in the theft charge involving 3650 oz. of gold, valued at £31,496, the property of the Arahura Gold Dredging Co., Ltd., was concluded. Morland, an Australian metallurgist, aged 42, is alleged to have stolen the gold at Arahura, near Hokitika, in 1940, when he was an employee of the company. Morland pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Odd Fellows’ Dance. The Masonic Hall was filled to capacity on Saturday night, when a dance was held by the Loyal Masterton Odd Fellows’ Lodge. The music was supplied by Jack Barnes’s Rhythm Boys’ Orchestra. Extras were contributed by Mr Nevill. A Monte Carlo waltz competition was won by Miss D. Calvert and Mr T. Dennis, of the U.S.M.C. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Bro. B. J. Seddon in a very efficient manner. Community singing was a feature of the evening. An excellent supper was served by the ladies, who assisted greatly in making the function the success it was. Anothei’ series of these dances will be held in the near future.
