— 4. OFF UNITED STATES EAST COAST. REAPPEARANCE OF U-BOATS. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) NEW YORK, April 10. The reappearance of enemy submarines off the east coast of the United States after an absence of seven months was disclosed when the Navy Department announced that a mediumseized American merchantman was torpedoed early this month. Forty lives were lost, including the captain, all the ship’s officers and nine members of the naval gun crew. The ship burst into flames and sank in three minutes.
