BRITISH DESTROYER
4 SUNK WHILE DEFENDING CONVOY TWO ATTACKING U-BOATS DESTROYED. GALLANT WORK OF FRENCH CORVETTE. LONDON, April 9. The British destroyer Harvester has been torpedoed and sunk while defending an Atlantic convoy. Two U-boats were sunk. The Harvester located a U-boat and forced it to the surface by dropping depth charges. It then rammed the submarine, which became jammed for a time under the destroyer’s stern. A Fighting French corvette later sighted the U-boat, engaged it with gun-fire and rammed it. The U-boat sank immediately and some survivors were picked up. The destroyer Harvester was damaged aft and was able to proceed at very slow speed. The corvette was instructed to return to the convoy. Later the Harvester was forced to stop and she was then torpedoed and sunk. While picking up survivors, the corvette sighted another U-boat on the surface. She attacked with gunfire and finally rammed and sank the U-boat. The Harvester twice escorted Mr Churchill across the Atlantic and also fought her way to Malta.
