PATRIOTIC APPEAL QUOTA NOT REACHED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Carterton and district patriotic committee reports that the sum received to date is still short of the amount aimed at. An urgent appeal is made to those who have not done so to hand in their cards and donations to the Borough Office as soon as possible. BOY SCOUTS 500 CARD TOURNAMENT. Owing to the bandroom having been taken by the Post and Telegraph Department for a temporary Post Office, the weekly card tournament held by the Carterton Boy Scout Committee will in future be held in the Red Shield Hut, Tyler’s Buildings, next to the Borough Council Chambers. A 500 party will be held on Wednesday evening next. Social Gathering.' On Wednesday evening at the Clare ville Hall, Clareville and district residents will entertain Private George Maisey at a social gathering. Earthquake. An earthquake was experienced in Carterton on Sunday morning at 6.30 o’clock. Personal Items. A large number of relatives and friends attended the funeral of the late Mr. George Butler, Senr., which took place on Saturday. A short service was conducted at the Methodist Church by the Rev. H. White, who afterwards officiated at the graveside. Many beautiful wreaths were sent. The pallbearers, were Messrs. W. Parker, Ray, King, Charles and Percy Butler. Mrs. Kenneth Hopkins, who has been spending a ’ holiday with her mother in Carterton, returned to Hastings on Saturday. Successful Dance. The dance held in the State Theatre, Carterton, on Saturday night under the •auspices of the Carterton Home and Schools Association, was well attended, and as a result the Carterton District High School Recreation Fund will very materially benefit, over £2sbeing taken. The music was supplied by Mr Udy’s Orchestra. Messrs. Gordon Stark and L. M. Clarke were M.’sC. Mr. C. ( K. Goodin contributed much appreciated extras. Novelty dances were won by Mr. Maidment and partner, Mr. Pireri and partner and Mr. Matthews and partner. Supper was provided. ‘ Harvest Thanksgiving. Good congregations were present at the harvest thanksgiving services held in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church yesterday. In the evening a united serwas held, the church being well filled, vice of Presbyterians and Methodists In the morning the Rev. W. J. Couling took for his text “Give us this Day our Daily Bread,” and at the evening service, “Man shall not Live by Bread Alone.” The produce is being sent to the Presbyterian Orphanage, Wellington. REGENT THEATRE “SMILIN’ THROUGH.” The musical comedy, “Smilin’ Through,” starring Jeanette MacDonald, Brian Aherne, Gene Raymond and lan Hunter, will be finally shown tonight. ■
