SHOT DOWN BY AMERICAN AIRCRAFT • AGAINST LOSS OF SIX. ATTACK ON SEA CONVOY. LONDON, April 2. United States aircraft encountered between 30 and 40 Zero planes in the Solomons area yesterday and shot down 16, nearly half the enemy’s total strength. Six American aircraft were lost, but two of the pilots were rescued. Another force of American aircraft on patrol in the Solomons area came across five Japanese destroyers and a cargo ship. Two separate attacks were made on the Japanese warships. It was not possible to observe results.
